The Merits of Mentoring

Happy Friday!

I wanted to talk about mentoring today and the brilliant benefits it has for both mentors and mentees. I’ve had the pleasure of being a mentor for WIBF Women in Banking and Finance - UK (a membership network that has championed women in financial services for over 40 years).

I’ve been giving my time as a mentor for the last 6 months and will be offering my time again to a new mentee.  I've immensely enjoyed the relationship with the mentee I was paired with and it’s been truly wonderful to see their growth, development and also to see them secure a fantastic promotion during this time.

Mentoring is a powerful tool for growth and development that benefits individuals, organisations and society. It builds stronger relationships, enhances professional skill development, and cultivates a culture of support, learning, and success.

Here are just some of the benefits for mentees and mentors of a mentoring relationship.

Mentees

  • Personal and Professional Growth - Mentoring helps individuals develop new skills, gain knowledge, and improve their performance, contributing to career advancement.

  • Guidance and Support: Mentees receive guidance on career development, decision-making, and navigating challenges. Mentors provide a safe sounding board.

  • Increased Confidence:  Mentoring can boost self-esteem by providing constructive feedback and encouragement, helping mentees to overcome self-doubt.

  • Exposure to New Perspectives: Mentees gain different viewpoints and experiences, leading to a broader understanding of their field or industry.

  • Accountability: Mentors help mentees set realistic goals and stay accountable for achieving them.

Mentors

  • Personal Fulfilment: Mentors find real fulfilment in helping others succeed and contributing to others’ growth and development. For me, it fuels my purpose.

  • Leadership Skills Development: Mentoring hones essential leadership skills, such as active listening, coaching, and providing constructive feedback.

  • Learning and Growth: Mentors can learn from their mentees, gaining fresh perspectives and new insights, particularly on emerging trends, technologies, or generational differences.

  • Increased Retention and Engagement in organisations: Mentoring can lead to increased job satisfaction and retention rates, as it creates a culture of support and development.

Thank you to Michael Kelly for introducing me to WIBF and to Samantha Carnley for the opportunity – it is so greatly appreciated.

Thank you to Lou Macari for the countless hours you have given, (and continue to give to me) being a mentor to me for so long now and to Peter Hill – I will never forget the hours you spent with me in the first few years of Arch inspire.

I would not be where I am today without you both!
